Grass snake

, 22 June 2016

This large grass snake was spotted swimming in Woods Mill lake.

Grass snakes are large, up to 150 cm and have a black and cream/yellow collar just behind their head and a series of 'dots and dashes' running down each side of their body. They are often seen in or near water as they feed on amphibians and small fish.

  • Nicholas Prosser:

I am interested in photographing Grass Snakes in the wild so I’d be grateful to hear of the locations of any Grass Snake sightings in West Sussex – (I live near Chichester but can travel)

  • Hi Nicholas, grass snakes love water, so sites with ponds and lakes would be a good place to start. Pagham Harbour could be worth a visit. We are still seeing them regularly at Woods Mill by the lake.
