Our walk programme was reduced due to the numerous heatwaves we experienced this summer. However the two walks that went ahead were very well supported and in both cases we saw large numbers of butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies and birds.
In early July our walk from Chyngton Farm to the mouth of the Cuckmere was full of butterflies. Fifteen species were recorded, with particularly large numbers of Gatekeepers and Common Blues. However, the highlight of the walk was an enormous bright green larva of an Eyed Hawkmoth. This was spotted on the grass next to the farm buildings.
For our second walk, we were fortunate to have James Duncan as our leader. A circuit of West Rise Marsh produced an impressive list of thirty bird species, including Sand Martins, Bearded Tits and Reed Buntings. Seven species of Odonata were recorded including numerous Black Tailed Skimmers, Migrant Hawkers and Southern Hawkers. Two Clouded Yellows were the pick of the butterflies.
However, the highlight of the summer period was the Celebratory Tea Party in East Dean Village Hall to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Eastbourne Group. A series of talks and short walks, together with a fine spread of homemade cakes, scones and biscuits had been organised by our superb secretary Janet Nott. It was much appreciated by the 80 members present.
