    October 2016: Rye Harbour Nature Reserve Sightings

    This month saw a major influx of ring ouzel, with six on Harbour Farm the 8th, three on Harbour Farm on the 10th and an amazing 85 at Castle Water on the 13th, by far the largest number ever recorded on the nature reserve (before this year the maximum was two!).

    One regular but uncommon wader which turns up at Rye Harbour at this time of year is the curlew sandpiper, and this year was no exception with small numbers present on the reserve during September.

    August saw the addition of yet another plant species to the reserve list with the discovery of a single plant of common sea lavender near the Mary Stanford lifeboat house on the 25th.

    Tots back to school for woodland fun

    Sussex Wildlife Trust Nature Tots are back for more muddy woodland fun and games in Henfield, Brighton, Horsham, Crawley, Eastbourne and on the beach in Rye bay this September. Bushcraft activities for children aged 3-5 years, accompanied by an adult.

    July 2016: Rye Harbour Nature Reserve Sightings

    One of the characteristic plants of Rye Harbour at this time of the year is red hemp-nettle. This inconspicuous little relative of the mints and dead-nettles, with its red flowers and nettle-like leaves, grows on sparsely vegetated habitats on the Beach Reserve and Harbour Farm, often where the ground has been disturbed.
