Nature-based solutions

Natural flood management

Storms and flooding have caused significant damage across the UK, and climate change is likely to increase the frequency of extreme weather in the future, costing governments and taxpayers millions and devastating communities and businesses.

We believe that the government should invest in wilder landscapes which could provide the natural solutions to help prevent flooding in future.

Sussex Wildlife Trust works to help restore natural flood storage areas so that landscapes can store more water, protecting people from floods whilst also enhancing wildlife.

Wilder Ouse

Wilder Ouse has evolved, and expands on the ground breaking work of the Sussex Flow Initiative. This partnership project delivered natural flood management for the first time in a lowland environment when it began in 2012, and has been creating and restoring habitats across the Ouse catchment that slows and store water.

Wilder Ouse is now working to build upon the successes of the Sussex Flow Initiative, working at restoring nature at a catchment scale.

Wilder Horsham District

This innovative five-year partnership between Sussex Wildlife Trust and Horsham District Council is delivering a Nature Recovery Network for Horsham District. Working closely with local communities and landowners, we aim to reverse the decline in species and habitats and enrich the natural environment for all residents and visitors.

Gatwick Greenspace Partnership

This community project works to benefit people, wildlife and the countryside between Horsham, Crawley, Horley, Reigate and Dorking.
