Storrington & Arun Valley Group projects

Our group currently focuses on four projects, Swifts, Green Spaces for Nature, Churchyards, and Bats.

The Swift project began in 2022 to raise awareness about the loss of swift nesting sites and to survey local village populations. Grants from the Wilder Horsham District have enabled the installation of nearly 100 boxes in five villages (Amberley, Billingshurst, Pulborough, Storrington and Sullington). We have approached developers to incorporate Swift bricks in new buildings. The intention is to extend the project to other nearby villages and to provide help for other related species.

The Green Space for Nature project has equipped our members with invaluable information on the management of gardens for Nature to benefit wildlife and supported the enhancement of parish council-owned spaces. Public attention has been directed towards planting for pollinators and creating wildflower meadows.

For our Churchyards project, we have partnered with the communities of St Mary’s (Pulborough) and St Michael’s (Amberley) who are striving to manage the churchyards and church buildings for the benefit of wildlife. These ancient buildings provide a habitat for various species, and we have assisted several successful public events focused on bats and moths.

In 2024, the Bat Project was established to raise awareness of the challenges faced by bats. Key aspects of this project are the identification of important habitats at risk of destruction in our area, and monitoring and recording bats in specific locations.
