We may be a ‘wet’ nation, but wetlands – wildlife-rich, carbon-capturing oases – are in shorter supply than you might think. Wetlands have largely been removed from our landscape, and this loss is a problem not just for nature, but for people too.

Wildlife highlight during November was a Shore Lark which was present on the Beach Reserve from the 16th to the end of the month.

October 2020 - Rye Harbour Nature Reserve sightings
Highlight on the reserve this month were probably two Pied Flycatcher present on the 11th at Castle Water.

Since 1970 when Rye Harbour Nature Local Nature Reserve was first declared by the County Council there have been many changes in the breeding bird fauna of the reserve.

Black Poplars
Back in 2003 we collected some saplings of Sussex Black Poplar from Wakehurst Place and with our team of volunteers planted them out at Castle Water.

Highlight this month was a Swallowtail butterfly which was found feeding on Buddleia at Watch Cottage on the 3rd, the first reserve record.

June 2020 - Rye Harbour Wildlife
Bird highlight during June was probably a Grasshopper Warbler which was present on Harbour Farm towards the end of the month.
