Mid Sussex
With a sprawling river network, ancient woodland and internationally rare chalk grassland, Mid Sussex constituency has some amazing places for wildlife. You can download the Mid Sussex Constituency Map to look more closely.
We want the next government to commit to our top 5 priorities for action on nature. Here are some local examples of the importance of these priorities in your constituency.
Bring Back our Lost Wildlife
The headwaters of the River Adur stretch across this constituency creating interesting opportunities to bring back iconic species such as Beavers, nature’s finest ‘wetland engineers’. Returning beavers to the wild can be a game changer for restoring lost wetlands and benefitting all kinds of wildlife. Moreover, beavers can help to reduce the risk of wildfires and flooding which threaten people’s homes
Enable Healthy Communities
Improving access to natural, wildlife-rich places where we live, learn and work will transform people’s lives, improving health, happiness, and hope across communities. Lost Woods of the Low Weald and Downs is an exciting partnership project which aims to bring back to life forgotten areas of woodland in Sussex. Working with landowners and local communities, we will bring back lost woodlands from the brink and connect a broader range of people to their local woods. Access to a clean and healthy environment is a basic human right that should be guaranteed through law.
Fund wildlife-friendly farming
Much of the Mid Sussex constituency is designated as the High Weald National Landscape and the South Downs National Park. Farming is fundamental to this area, but the destruction of nature and the impacts of climate change are the biggest threats to food security in the UK. We need a government that supports farmers to shift towards regenerative, nature-friendly methods. Many farmers and land managers have gone to great lengths to support wildlife but without being adequately rewarded. The budget for environmental farming has already fallen by a third since 2010. Not investing properly means everyone loses.
