Early Spring Bird Sounds of Rye Harbour (02/03/25)

Join us in a feast for the ears, as we listen out for birdsong and calls. In this walking workshop with birdsong specialist Charlie Peverett, we'll focus on the varied soundscape of the nature reserve from the beach reserve and its fringes. The morning is suitable for those with no previous knowledge of identifying birdsong.

Ahead of the day we'll share the recorded sounds of five distinctive species of Rye Harbour to get familiar with. During the walk we'll try and find the real-world live performances of each of them, along with many other sounds, and learn some different techniques for tuning our ears to them.

Meeting at Rye Harbour Car Park, this will be a slow walk, of up to 2 miles (3km) over the course of around 2.5 hours, with at least one sit down in a hide. We'll end at the Discovery Centre, where our café will be open as usual.

Accessibility: There are public toilets close to Rye Harbour Car Park with disabled access (radar key required).
Our gently-paced walk will end at Rye Harbour Discovery Centre, a wheelchair-friendly venue, with a step-free entrance ramp. Our toilet facilities include two that are wheelchair accessible, and we will be no more than a mile away from them on the walk.
Most of the route is easy for wheelchairs, and the bird hides are accessible. However part of the walk has some uneven and loose surfaces, making it moderately difficult for manual wheelchairs.

Public Transport: The 313 Stagecoach bus travels from Northiam to Rye train station and on to Rye Harbour village.
