Remembering the Mary Stanford's Crew at Rye Harbour Discovery Centre (17/11/24) Sunday, 17th November 2024 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
We’re marking the 96th anniversary of the loss of the Mary Stanford lifeboat crew with an illustrated talk about the tragedy of November 15,1928, followed by maritime songs.
The Mary Stanford Lifeboat House stands on the shingle shore at Rye Harbour nature reserve. A historic memorial to the courageous crew who lost their lives in one of the worst disasters in the RNLI's history.
Proceeds from this event will be shared between Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Friends of The Mary Stanford Lifeboat House charity. Supporting Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and Discovery Centre, and the campaign to save this important building.
Join us for…
The Mary Stanford Lifeboat disaster, a history in photographs – a talk by Dr Roy Brigden.
Roy is honorary archivist at Great Dixter, former Keeper of the Museum of English Rural Life at the University of Reading, and one our valued volunteers at the Discovery Centre.
Maritime songs about life at sea - performed by the HogEye Men.
A duo from this long-established, London-based shanty crew will sing a song about the tragedy, written by Hogeye Man Phil who lives in Lydd. Other songs include the tale of a local shipwreck.
Our café will be open as usual, serving refreshments and lunches.
