A Beginner’s Guide to Wading Birds – Seven Sisters Country Park (04/09/24) Wednesday, 4th September 2024 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM
Tutor: James Duncan
Only around a third of the UK's wading bird species actually breed in Sussex. The majority favour more northerly latitudes. During late summer and autumn, the wetlands of Sussex become a critical hub for refuelling and regaining condition lost during breeding. Some may continue to warmer equatorial regions, whilst others are simply trying to escape the frozen north.
How many of these can you identify? If you feel perplexed by Plovers, stumped by Sandpipers and need assistance untangling your Knots and 'Shanks, join James Duncan to help guide you through the wader puzzle. The day will start with a 1.5 hour lecture at the Seven Sisters Visitor Centre followed by a walk out into Seven Sisters Country Park to put the theory into practise. There will be a 20 minute break after the talk for refreshments. You are welcome to bring your own snacks or there is a café at the centre. The course is aimed at beginners and no previous knowledge is required. The walk will be at a gentle pace with lots of time to ask questions.
