Wet weather facilities
Our new Rye Harbour Discovery Centre is now open, which has indoor educational facilities with toilets, but even so, we need to stress the importance of suitable clothing for outdoor activities. Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is very flat and open, and therefore exposed to the elements; it can feel very cold here as it is often windy. Lots of layers that can be removed if necessary are recommended.
Toilets
There are accessible toilet facilities in the Discovery Centre, but no toilet facilities on the nature reserve itself. Additional public toilets can be found in Rye Harbour village, next to the car park and at Dog's Hill Road, Winchelsea Beach.
Food
School groups should bring packed lunches and plenty to drink; any waste will need to be returned to school or home with pupils.
The Lime Kiln Café inside the Discovery Centre serves tea, coffee, cakes and light lunches. There is also a shop, tea room and café in Rye Harbour village.
Self-led Visits
Groups are welcome to visit the nature reserve with their own leaders, but we do ask that they let us know in advance when they will be on-site, to help us manage numbers of visitors using the facilities. The classroom and allocated school toilets are only available to groups that have paid for hire.
There are a number of Activity Trails available for self-led visits; we particularly recommend the Play Trail and the Nature Connections Trail.
