All you need to know about visiting The Deneway

The Deneway reserve is a thin strip of land that sits between residential gardens and the railway line. Site access is limited to a single gate at the southern end of the site on The Deneway road, there is no access from the north along Windmill Drive. Please see our 'Getting to The Deneway' page for more detailed directions if you are visiting for the first time.

A single track exists through the site. As the reserve is not open to the public, this track regularly becomes overgrown and it can be challenging to access the upper areas of the reserve. There are a few glades (open spaces) that have been created by the youth rangers and volunteer teams that help to manage the site, but the majority of the land is dense woodland.

Facilities:

  • Compost toilet (accessible only by steps)
  • NO flushing toilets
  • NO running water
  • NO café or refreshments
  • Limited phone signal

If you are attending a youth rangers session at The Deneway, we expect you to be prepared by:

  • Wearing clothing appropriate for the setting e.g. long-sleeved top and trousers to protect you from ticks and nettle sings, sturdy footwear, waterproofs
  • Bringing enough water for the duration of the session
  • Bringing sun protection
  • Bringing insect repellent during summer months

Please note it can be difficult to leave the site during a session as this requires the whole group to return to the gate. Therefore, please ensure you have everything you need with you before starting the session and will be comfortable in the environment for the duration of the session. If you need to leave a session early for any reason, please inform your group leader before the session starts.
