The Butterflies of the Chalk Downs - East Sussex (13/08/2023) Sunday, 13th August 2023 9:00 AM - 12:45 PM
RESCHEDULED FROM 5TH AUGUST WHICH WAS CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER
Tutor: Michael Blencowe
The chalk downs of Sussex are famed for their diversity of butterflies. They are one of the best places in Britain to see many of our iconic species such as the Adonis Blue and Chalk Hill Blue.
This course will give you an introduction to the butterflies that can be found in this landscape. In a special online Zoom presentation (evening, Thursday 3 August) we’ll look at the various species that can be found here focusing on their identification, ecology, habitats and where to find them in Sussex.
Then, a few days later on Saturday 5 August, we’ll take our new knowledge out into the field and explore Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Malling Down Nature Reserve near Lewes. Here we’ll search for butterflies in the sheltered combe and hopefully encounter 20+ species including many chalk specialists.
The course is aimed at beginners and no previous knowledge is required.
Location: Meet on the bridge over the Ouse on Cliffe High Street in Lewes (next to Argos), BN7 2AN.
