Members-only events
Guided Walk at Malling Down nature reserve, Lewes.
Dominating the easterly views of Lewes, Malling Down is an exceptional example of the rare chalk grassland habitat found across the South Downs, excellent for downland flora and butterflies. Evolving over a thousand years of sheep grazing, these endangered meadows are one of the country’s richest floral habitats. Over 90% of chalk grassland has been lost to changing agricultural practices across the South Downs since the 1950s. The Wildlife Trust has been managing Malling Down since the 1980s trying to halt and reverse its decline and habitat loss.
