Walk – Everybody Welcome (08/08/2020) CANCELLED Saturday, 8th August 2020 9:45 AM - 3:30 PM

Cancelled until further notice.

If you have booked on this course we will contact you a few weeks before the course date to confirm its cancellation and arrange a full refund. Thank you for your patience.

Please join us for what promises to be a lovely walk. Meet at Burton Mill Pond Car Park, GU28 0JR (Explorer Map 121 SU 979180) in time to start promptly at 9:45. If travelling north from Duncton on the A285, after about a mile there is a right turn signed to Burton Mill Pond. The car park is about half a mile down this road on the left.

As the car park is small, we would like to minimise the number of our cars trying to park there. If you are coming in a car with spare seats and you know of others in a similar situation, could you please consider meeting at the nearby Cricketers in Duncton (Explorer Map 121 SU 960171), leaving one car there and car-sharing for the short journey to the Mill Pond. When you arrive there, please park tidily. If there is still a problem finding parking spaces for everyone, then we will organize a shuttle to the Cricketers, where cars can be left.

To help with catering, we will pre-order lunch a few days earlier. The menus will be added to these details about a week before the walk, along with instructions on how to place your orders.

Our walks, of about 3.5 miles in the morning and 2.5 miles in the afternoon, will explore Burton and Chingford Ponds, a local reserve and an SSSI.

In the morning we will walk around Burton Pond, an atmospheric hammer pond surrounded by reedbeds and woodland. Our path leads through a variety of habitats, home to dragonflies, pond edge plants, wildfowl, some ancient chestnut trees and the rare Desmoulin’s whorl snail. We anticipate seeing a number of different birds.

We will drive to the Cricketers at Duncton for lunch, arriving around 12:30.

The afternoon walk commencing at 14.00, starts and finishes at the pub. We will explore Chingford Pond, a shallow lake surrounded by trees. We also hope to see some interesting wildlife in and around the local fish farm ponds.

Parts of the morning and afternoon walks can be muddy after rain, in which case walking boots or Wellingtons are recommended.

You are welcome to do only the morning or afternoon walk if you wish.

Walk led by Lin and Ross (0208 8942276 or 07900 697411 on the day).
