Vine and Rose Walk – Everyone Welcome

Meet in time for a prompt 9.45 start at The Queens Head, West Chiltington, RH20 2JN (Explorer Map 121: TQ 091185). When approaching from the B2139, Coolham Rd, take the West Chiltington Road heading west. After about a mile and a quarter, turn left into Church St and the pub car park is almost immediately on the right. The pub will be open from 9.00 so we will be able to use their facilities, have coffee (and maybe a bacon sandwich!) and place our orders for lunch. Menus can be perused on the pub website at http://www.queensheadwestchilt.com/

Our morning walk of about four miles will mainly be to the northwest of the village taking in a converted windmill, sections of vineyards, sheep pastures, old ponds, woodland and great views of the South Downs. There are some gentle inclines and it could be muddy in places.

We hope to arrive back for lunch at about 12.30.

Prior to the afternoon walk we will be visiting the 12th century church of St Mary’s which retains many features of historical and architectural interest. These include an exceptionally long hagioscope and also wall paintings dating from the 12th to 14th centuries. The walk of about two miles takes us southeast mainly through farmland and past the rose nurseries.

You are welcome to join us on the morning or afternoon walk or, of course, both.
