Here in Sussex, we’re lucky enough to have a coastline stretching the length of the county, providing us with a range of resources and beautiful natural habitats. Sadly, our seas are suffering from overexploitation and direct damage as a result of our use.
It’s important that we have appropriate legislation to protect our marine environment, and that this is suitably enforced and understood by sea users. The snap election is your chance to ensure our seas are going to be looked after, and not lost to an “out of sight, out of mind” attitude. The UK Government are in the process of designating Marine Protected Areas in English waters, called Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs). So far 50 MCZs have been designated, six of which are off the Sussex coast. A third and final tranche of MCZ designations is to be consulted on over the next year and we want to ensure this process is not overlooked.
Ask your prospective parliamentary candidate what their party will do to ensure that wildlife thrives in our seas once more, and whether they intend to make sure that more Marine Protected Areas are designated and policed.
