Nothing but Bluesky, from now on....

Sussex Wildlife Trust ceased posting to Twitter (I refuse to call it X) a while ago now, for what I hope are obvious reasons. It was a great place once for many people - creative, sociable and fun. 

Facebook, TikTok and Insta have their place, for sure, but I'm here today to try to convince previous Twitter users (and anyone else interested) to join us over on Bluesky. 

I agree with people who worry doomscrolling saps the brain and makes you feel depressed. But, used wisely, social media can be a joy.

I was an early user of Twitter, and found a whole friendship group there, local, national and international. It was great for news, what you'd seen on TV chatter, sport, creativity, traffic alerts. It was a warm, funny environment, with lots of silly mischief. There were even some Lewes Tweet-ups, in pubs! We all learnt what a #hashtag was. But, as we all know, that all changed. It became dark and abusive, so I left. And I was sad about that. I flirted with Threads and Mastodon, but neither quite cut the mustard.

Then I found Bluesky. It took a while to find my feet, but I love it. It has much of the good stuff of Twitter. I found lots of my old Twitter friends there. Once you've sorted out who to follow, it's fantastic for answering questions (such as when I'm editing and I need to know where the apostrophe goes in Mothers Day. Mothers' Day. Mother's Day?). 

I follow Lists of my interests, including The Archers. I accidentally got a lot of followers when I was added to a List of people who love the Oxford comma! My bio makes clear the sort of person I am and what I care about. Life is stressful, and I'm not there to engage in debate, so I only follow feeds I enjoy. I block or unfollow if I don't. I've muted words for subjects and people I don't want to see. 

There are many lovely wildlife feeds to follow. Both in Sussex and beyond. Wildflowerhour is there, Barry Yates and David Bentley post fantastic photos from around Rye. Sussex Wildlife Trust is there, obviously. If you follow us, you'll know it's where we share blogposts, also photos from our Nature Table community. We provide news and updates on events and reserves. We also engage with others about wildlife - we love sharing wildlife posts from around Sussex.
