National Marine Week - Celebrating the Seabed
By Ella Garrud
Wilder Communities Officer
This National Marine Week we are celebrating the UK’s amazing seabed habitats. In Sussex, there is a wide diversity of different seabed habitats, each supporting a different array of marine life.
Seabed habitats are full of incredible wildlife and are often sensitive to human disturbance. They are threatened with destruction by industrial scale fishing in many areas. Fishing methods such as bottom trawling drag huge heavy nets across the seafloor, catching almost everything in their path, and damaging fragile habitats.
Here's how you can show your support for our seabeds this summer:
- The Government is currently running a consultation on the practice of bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas. Add your voice to this consultation by telling the Government to stop bottom trawling.
- Take part in an event. Sussex Wildlife Trust are running a Marine Week Beach Litter Survey on Wednesday 6th August – book your place here.
- There’s strength in numbers, so join our wave of marine champions. Sign up to the marine newsletter.
