Eighteen members of the Eastbourne group enjoyed a walk on 14 March in spring-like weather.

The heavy rain of recent weeks prevented us reaching the beach but we had good views of Skylarks, Stonechats, Grey Herons, Wigeon and Canada Geese as we strolled down the concrete path. A brief diversion to Foxhole Farm was rewarded with a hovering Kestrel and a stunning Buzzard.

The farm pond was alive with small invertebrates, including numerous Water Boatmen. On the return to the car park, some of the party braved the muddy path to the top of the river bank and were treated to fine views of three Avocets amongst the gulls and Redshank.

After all the gloom and dampness, it was a treat to see a Peacock Butterfly and a Buff-tailed Bumblebee in flight. Between us we recorded 32 different bird species.
