Claire Saxby has been volunteering for Shoresearch for nearly 10 years. She arrived with good knowledge of the marine environment from overseas, but was keen to better understand our local ecology and its conservation.
She quickly became an invaluable volunteer and has continued her learning by attending lots of specialist ID courses with us. In the process Claire has contributed lots of data to the Sussex Kelp Recording Scheme, assisted Ian Tittley with his Sussex Seaweed Atlas, and independently surveyed Royal Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne with fellow Shoresearcher Keith, which resulted in a report being published through the Porcupine Natural History Society.
Recently, Claire added data entry to her repertoire, helping us ensure the data we collect gets properly recorded.
We’re hugely grateful for her hard work, and delighted our Marsh Award for Marine Conservation nomination for her was successful. The Marsh Awards are part of The Wildlife Trusts’ annual programme, celebrating those who go above and beyond in conservation work.
The Awards Panel were impressed by Claire’s dedication to volunteering and her incredibly valuable contribution to Shoresearch, as well as the support she’s offered to new volunteers.

This is fantastic recognition for the hours and hours of work Claire has put in to help marine conservation. It has all been done with the very simple premise of doing something meaningful to help our local wildlife and beyond. Claire loves what she does and has particularly enjoyed meeting and working with like-minded people. Hugely proud of her.

How dedicated, committed and knowledgeable- Claire obviously loves being involved with the Sussex Wildlife Trust while also doing some great, varied, thorough and detailed work – anything from data entry to shore-searches, while also taking wonderful photos.
