We were delighted to hear that one of our longstanding business members Southern Co-op has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. The awards celebrate the success of exciting and innovative businesses which are leading the way with pioneering products or services, delivering impressive social mobility programmes or showing their commitment to excellent sustainable development practices.

Southern Co-op is an independent co-operative, which operates retail, funeral and coffee services across the south of England. It has been a Sussex Wildlife Trust business member for over 10 years and has supported several of our education projects including Youth Rangers and Nature Tots.

They have also supported our marine conservation work, donating £5,000 to Sussex Seasearch and Shoresearch in recent years. As part of their partnership with us, they participate in regular beach cleans with Co-op staff and members, and organise member events with the Trust, including the ever-popular Bat Walks.

During lockdown we also ran a well-received Introduction for Mindful Birdwatching for staff members. They are great advocators of our work, with sustainability being a key value of their business, and this has been recognised by this award.

Organisers of the award stated: “It has been an exceptionally hard few years for businesses and this achievement is testament to the resilience shown through these unprecedented times. Southern Co-op is awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development because it can clearly demonstrate that is delivering on its original purpose to put purpose before profit.”

Congratulations to Southern Co-op!
