We were saddened to hear about the death of Alf Simpson MBE.

Alf made an exceptional contribution to nature conservation in Sussex for many decades, and in particular with the Sussex Wildlife Trust where he was a Trustee for many years. Lots of people will remember Alf as the Volunteer Reserve Manager of Ebernoe Common nature reserve, leading hundreds of work parties alongside his wife Iris at our flagship nature reserve.

Alf led many Sussex Ornithological Society work parties at Rye Harbour during the 1970s, especially building the islands at Ternery Pool for the nesting Common Terns – using rafts, wheelbarrows and shovels. He and Iris were longstanding members of the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve.

Alf was also heavily involved with Sussex Amphibian & Reptile Group (SARG) and The Sussex Ornithological Society (SOS)

We pass on our condolences to Iris.
