On the 11th day of Christmas, my true love gave to me....

Eleven Pipefish piping!

Did you know?

  • Pipefish perform a courtship ritual dance when they are ready to mate, where they entwine their bodies together while they swim
  • Pipefish are related to seahorses, and like seahorses the male carries the eggs in a pouch from where the eggs will hatch
  • There are six species of pipefish in the UK
  • You can sometimes find pipefish in rock pools at low tide. They are very well camouflaged because they look a lot like pieces of seaweed, so keep your eyes peeled for them while rock pooling
  • Pipefish like to eat small creatures like zooplankton and small crustaceans
