Living Seas Volunteering - Sussex coast
- Location:
- Various sites along the Sussex Coast
- Overview of the role:
- Shoresearch: is a volunteer scheme to identify and record animals, plants and habitats along the Sussex shoreline. Seasearch: is a project for volunteer divers and snorkelers who have an interest in underwater life. Beach litter surveys: As well as cleaning up our coastline, volunteers record the items they find in a 100m stretch of beach. This data is submitted to a national data base as an evidence base for campaigns to reduce beach litter.
- Type of tasks you will be involved with:
- Recording information about the marine environment.
- Experience/Skills Required:
- Beach litter surveys: no previous experience required though we ask that any volunteers wishing to get involved who are under 18 years old get in touch with us directly prior to registering. Shoresearch:We welcome volunteers of all ability and experience to join Shoresearch. The survey events provide a great opportunity for those new to marine life identifications and marine surveys to learn in the field from experienced Shoresearchers. Events are not suitable for young children, and we ask not to bring dogs. We ask that any volunteers wishing to get involved who are under 18 years old get in touch with us directly prior to registering. Seasearch: In order to join Sussex Wildlife Trust coordinated dives you will need a scuba diving qualification (PADI Rescue Diver, BSAC Sports Diver or equivalent), to have done at least 20 dives (10 of which should be in UK waters), to be at least 18 years old
- Days/Times we would like you to be available:
- Various days of the week - dates and timings are advertised to registered volunteers.
- Benefits to volunteer & possible training opportunities:
- Areas around the UK we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to help our seas recover their health. This will only happen if we protect our marine habitats and species properly and manage this natural resource in a sustainable manner. You will be helping to collect information that helps monitor changes.
