How to build a wildlife pond

Top tips

  • Sunny location away from trees
  • Terraces at a range of depths including:
  • Lots of shallow areas - most of the pond should be less then 30 cm deep
  • A deeper area of 60 cm, but only if you have space. The surface area of the pond should be at least 5 times the maximum depth
  • Shallow sloping sides to allow wildlife easy access
  • A boggy area if there is space
  • Links to other features in your garden, for example log and rock piles, hedgerows, long grass and shrubs
  • Rain water
