Barnacles

About:

Barnacles are sessile, meaning they do not move. They stick onto a rock and feed by reaching into the water with a modified beating leg which they use to catch plankton.

How to identify:

<p>Out of water, they close up into a diamond or hexagaonal shape sticking up from the rock. They are white or grey in colour.</p>

Where:

Many different species are found on rocky shores in the UK.

Barnacles are closely related to crabs and lobsters. There are over 1000 species of barnacles in the oceans.
