Plaice

Scientific name:

Haematopus ostralegus

About:

An oval flatfish, growing up to 50cm long. Lives on the sea bottom, on sandy or gravel shores. Young fish can sometimes be found in rock pools.

How to identify:

<p>Told from the other flatfish, of which there are several different species, by the orangey spots on a greenish-brown background.</p>

Where:

Found all round our coasts.

Fantastic facts:

Juvenile Plaice are the same shape as ‘normal’ fish, but as they mature they start to lay on one side, with their eyes moving together onto the other side.
