During the summer, adults are brick red underneath, with orange and black pattern. How to identify: Sandpipers can be a difficult group of birds to get to grips with. However, the Knot is one of the more easily identified species, being fairly large and chunky, with shortish greeny legs. When they fly, Knot have a pale grey tail, rump and back, with a white belly. Where: A very common winter visitor to our coast, gathering in very large numbers on muddy estuaries.
