Walk - Everyone Welcome (18/04/2020) Saturday, 18th April 2020 9:45 AM - 3:00 PM
Meet at The Worlds End, Arundel Road, Patching, BN13 3UQ (Explorer Map 121: TQ 086 056), ready for a 9.45 departure. The pub is just north of the A27, signposted off the A280/A27 roundabout. Please park in the large car park at the rear of pub. Lunch will need to be pre-booked, details of which will be posted here nearer the time.
The morning walk of four miles takes us through a meadow and fields to the village of Patching which has a well-kept, ancient church. A gentle slope leads up to fine views of the Downs to the East and the sea to the South. The walk continues through part of the splendid woodland of the Angmering Park Estate. There should be an abundance of spring flowers and maybe the sound of skylarks, amongst other birdsong. We will aim to return to The Worlds End at 12.30.
The afternoon walk of about three miles goes south up a gentle slope to Highdown Hill. This is the site of a fort dating back to the Bronze Age, which is owned by the National Trust. From the trig point at the top of the hill, on a clear day, there are views of the Isle of Wight to the West and Seven Sisters to the East. The miller’s tomb further down the hill is steeped in history and stories of smuggling. The return to the Worlds End is an easy walk through Highdown Copse, then along a track and footpath to the tunnel under the main road.
Everyone is welcome to come on both walks. There is the option of doing either just the morning or afternoon walk.
