Today was the first of our DownTown Lewes work parties in St John's Sub Castro churchyard. We're working to improve a corner of the churchyard for wildflowers and wildlife and today I was joined by a team of volunteers who evidently had not checked the weather forecast. Despite the mostly wet weather we cut, sliced and snipped our way through the churchyard using scythes, hooks, shears and loppers.
By cutting back the thick grass and invading trees we're paving the way for more wildflowers in 2014. Thanks to Gail, Jean, Paul, Jeanette, Patrick and David for ignoring the weather and helping out today.
We will be holding other work parties over the coming months - if you're interested in getting involved please email me ([email protected])
Wildlife seen in the churchyard today included the first fieldfares of the winter and an angle shades moth.
